Gender Equality and how we can achieve it

Daniel - Fri, 25th January, 2019 @ 02:26:41 AM

What is Gender Equality?

If men and women enjoyed the same rights, same freedom, same opportunities, same resources and same rewards in all sectors of society, then that's gender equality. Gender equity is the wheel that leads us to gender equality or (sexual equality). Gender equity is the process of being fair to women and men. In a society where gender equality is in full existence, Girls and women can go ahead and achieve whatever they want to achieve because they know they have equal chance.

Below are some steps or guides that will foster gender equality in our lifetimes:

(1) Let's stop sexual harassment and child marriage

Child marriage had been existing and is still existing in our world today. I consider it to be the biggest drawback to a girls’ education. In the female child marriage, The man is always above 18 years of age while the girl is below 18. There is a  formal marriage or informal union by both parties, where the girl is usually not ready, but will admit into it because she is persuaded or compelled.

Any sexual advances, requests for sexual favors that is not welcomed by a woman is considered a sexual harassment. Also, when a woman is intimidated, threatened, abused and beaten, such is also considered as sexual harassment. We have seen and heard how some women and girls are forced to meet certain sexual conditions before they can get a job. Some girls are even scared to walk alone on the streets for the fear of been sexually harassed. We have always heard that education is the key; the truth is, If we want girls to succeed in education, we must put an end child marriage and sexual harassment.

(2) Let's encourage women to go into power

If you check the number of women in government, you will notice that they are always fewer than the men. For instance, you may wish to count the number of women in senate and house of representatives. Many countries are yet to have a woman as president even to this moment. It's high time we encourage, support and motivate women into participation. Women must start helping women, men must start encouraging woman and above all, the woman must also help herself. I believe that if all women can work together, they will achieve this goal. In terms of population, the women are more than men. With regards to knowledge, some women are very knowledgeable and intelligent. The media, internet and education are tools that the women can use to their advantage. Getting a woman to to become a leader, even in her community is fundamental to empowering women and girls in that community.

(3) Let's educate the girl child

I have heard people say that "education is not important for the girl child, after all, she will end up as a house wife". This is a complete fallacy. It is not true. Who says a woman cannot be the CEO of a company? In fact, It was a woman that stopped the killing of twin in Calabar, Nigeria. She also promoted education during her time there. As at the point of writing this article, Calabar is one of the highly developed states in Nigeria.  If a girl child is educated, she is more likely to make sure that her children also receive education. It is very important to invest in a girl’s education because this singular act will transform a nation. Also, the children of educated mothers are less likely to die before they are born. This is because they are well aware HIV and AIDS and are less likely to contact it. They also understand the importance of immunization. (Read our article on immunization HERE). Education of the girl child is the best way to end early child marriage.

(4) Let's empower women and girls

It is everybody's duty to support a woman or girl in crisis. Millions have been subjected to abuse, sexual harassment, child marriage, child labor and trafficking. The government must create policies that will enable women to do decent jobs. When you empower a woman, you have indirectly empowered her family. Flexible loans should be made available to women to start up small businesses. We should always appreciate every woman that have contributed positively into our lives; in this way we will encourage them to do more and thus empower more women in return. Non Governmental organizations (NGO) should be created for this very purpose. If all women and girls are well empowered, I personally believe that crimes like prostitution will be a thing of the past.

(5) Let's stop the war and violence

Whenever there is violence or war, it is the women that often receive the biggest blows. Those who survive will have to live with these terrifying pictures which may come in the form of rape or death of their newly born. Some women have been manipulated into participating in suicide bombing attacks while others have been killed by these violence and wars. Many women have been made widow while some children are orphans. Also, Many women had suffered silently because they are scared of stigmatization. They are left alone to fend for themselves and their children after the times of war. Some who still live with their husband are constantly beaten and maltreated. We need to speak up, protect them and start taking legal actions in order to stop the violence against women
