Below some of it's benefit:

  • It contains a high amount of vitamin C

The African Star Apple contains a large amount of vitamin C which does the followings in the body:
  1. Combats high blood pressure
  2. Lowers the risk of heart disease
  3. Prevents gout (arthritis)
  4. Improve iron absorption in the small intestine
  5. Boosts immunity, enabling the white blood cells to fight germs better
  6. Prevent memory loss as one grow older

  • It contains a high amount of Calcium and Potassium

Calcium does the followings in the human body:
  1. Makes the bones strong, developed and healthy
  2. It is an essential part of the blood clotting process (this will prevent excess blood loss from a cut)
  3. It helps the muscle during contraction, including those of the heart
  4. It help cells to take up glucose, thereby preventing diabetes
  5. It is needed for the nerve cell to function properly
  6. It increases sperm mobility into fertilizing the egg or ova

Potassium does the followings in the body:

  1. It reduces stress and anxiety
  2. It regulates fluid and electrolyte balance in the body
  3. Regulates blood pressure
  4. Regulates blood sugar
  5. It improves bone health

Because the African Star Apple contains a high amount of potassium and calcium, they indirectly carry out all the above listed functions in the body.

  • It is a powerful anti-oxidant

Antioxidants help to prevent, stop and delay damages to our body cells. As an anti-oxidant, the African Star Apple removes oxidizing agents from our body, protecting it from the highly reactive molecules called free radicals. These free radicals, if not eliminated, can be damaging to our body cells. Through these processes, the African star apple boost one's health.

This fruit is a very good source of iron. Iron is important because:
  1. It is a major constituents in the formation of haemoglobin. (Haemoglobin is the oxygen carrying pigment in the blood)
  2. It prevents anaemia
  3. Low levels of iron in blood will make us physically weak and tired
  4. It is needed to maintain a healthy skin, nails and hair

  • It is highly medicinal

Both it's leaves, fruit and seeds are very medicinal. Drinking the liquid of the boiled leaf can be very useful in treating dysentery. Ointments made from the seeds can be used to treat skin infections. This fruit also works great for the heart. It lowers blood cholesterol and bring the level of blood glucose to normal.

  • It aids digestion and prevents vomiting

It is particularly good for pregnant women because it enhances digestion and absorption of food. The embryo and foetus can now get enough nutrients to grow well.

NOTABLE POINTS IN Basic Science

All fruits have seeds. There is nothing like a naturally occurring seedless fruit. Even banana, coconut and pineapple have all got seeds.

Weight can be defined as the force of gravity acting on an object. If you traveled to space, you would be weightless because there isn't any force of gravity acting there. We all have weight on earth becasue the force of gravity acts here. Weight is measured in Newton

Massis the amount or quantity of matter/material contained in a body, For instance, everything you are composed of, both from within and outside will make up your mass. Mass is constant throughout the universe. You will have the same mass on earth and moon. Mass is measured in gram or kilogram. Mass is quite different from weight.

Matter is anything that has mass and occupy space. Matter can exist in four states namely:

  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas
  • Plasma
