Honesty is one of the core values required of a citizen. Without honesty, a nation will be considered as corrupt; Corruption is a path to doom on such Nation’s economy. Majority of the citizens living in a corrupt society will end up suffering; especially because of the dishonest actions of their leaders. To further show the importance of honesty in a Nation like Nigeria, emphasis has been laid on it in the Nigerian pledge which must be recited daily by every Nigerian student (primary and secondary). It is expressed thus:
I pledge to Nigeria my Country
To be Faithful Loyal and Honest
To serve Nigeria with all my Strength
To defend Her Unity
And uphold Her Honor and Glory
So help me GOD.
By definition, Honesty means always telling the truth to others and yourself.
One who is honest does not cheat or steal in any form. He does what is right regardless of who's watching or who's not.
Being honest will also imply that you respect others and yourself.
Just before we look into the attributes of honesty, we need to understand what an attribute is. An attribute will imply that “something is the result of a specific thing”. For instance, when you pass your examination, you may say that your exam success is attributed to the hard work that had been put towards it. In the same sense, there are also many good virtues that can result from the honesty we practice and we shall consider some of these below.
When you are honest with all you dealings, you will earn the loyalty of people. Take for instance; honesty is a key factor required by a business men/women in order to gain loyal customers. This is true because the customers will be confident in patronizing them since they trust in their product or services. Similarly, a loyal person will always be faithful to one who is honest. Honesty and Loyalty go hand in hand.
Your status of being a dependable person is based on your level of honesty. If you are trusted and dependable by a large number of people, then there is a very high chance that you have been honest with your dealings. On the contrary, if you are not trusted by the people around you; it may imply that you are quite a dishonest person. There is this saying that:
Everyone deserves a benefit of doubt
Note: Whenever we are given the benefit of doubt, we need to be very honest with such benefit because it could be an excellent opportunity for something great in the future.
Truthfulness will always go alongside with honesty. The security department of certain countries would have been formidable if the police, army and navy were honest in the discharge of their respective duties. Personally, I have seen some policemen collect bribes openly from the road side and this why the citizens may incorrectly classify all of them as dishonest.
A person will be considered to be trustworthy when he/she had shown the quality of being good, sincere, honest and reliable. People who have shown some level of honesty will eventually become trustworthy. Trustworthiness can earn you recommendations and promotions in an organization. Also, it can provide you with a much larger responsibility which could mean more pay and more authority.
Integrity simply means the quality of being honest and having strong moral principle. Your integrity and reputation increases over a period of time when honesty has been consistently displayed. If the majority of the citizens of a country are shady and dishonest, especially to other countries of the world, the integrity of the people and even the country may be put at stake. The country can become labeled as corrupt even though we may still have some very honest citizens living within and outside of it. In summary, the citizens can bring integrity to their nation through the practice of honesty and hard work. You can read on your rights as a citizen here
Note: Integrity is earned and honesty is one of its key.
One who is satisfied with whatever they have is said to be content. Although it is good to be ambitious, this should be done with honesty. The popular slang “yahoo boy” which is often used in Nigeria refers to people who are not content with what they have, thus are becoming overly ambitious, dishonest and shady in their cyber activities. No matter how bad the situation may be, we must be honest towards achieving any dream we have got. Honesty is quite important in the global reputation of a country.
Honest people are always transparent in all their dealings. Being transparent means: "One is open and upright in whatever they do".
Note: A person is considered to be dishonest if they:
