Modes of transportation and Means of transportation are not the same thing. Recall that transportation is the process of moving humans and goods from one point to another through various means.
The means of transportation refers to the object through which transportation is achieved. For instance, cars, trains and ships are means of transportation because they are the objects that transport humans and goods from one point to another. These objects (cars, trains and ships) require a medium to move through; for instance, cars move through roads, trains move on railways and ships move through water.
The medium through which movement occurs by the various means of transportation is referred to as the mode of transportation.
Air, land, water, pipelines and human porterage are all modes of transportation and their respective means of transportation will include:
- Airplanes (Air)
- Cars and Trains (Land),
- Ships, boats, Speed Boats, Canoes and Ferries (Water)
- Donkey, mule and Camels (Human Porterage)
Note: Land mode of Transportation comprises of both the Road Transportation and Rail Transportation

Road transport is very flexible. This is because humans and goods can be moved directly to their target location. For instance, a car or bicycle can drop you right inside your house.
Road transport does not adhere to any timetable. This implies that movement on road can occur at anytime regardless the weather conditions.
Road transport will normally have access to all parts of the country because of the availability of road network.
Goods can be delivered en route without the owner of such goods participating in the journey.
Road transport creates employment opportunities for the citizens of a country.
Road transport allows the private ownership of vehicles for average citizens, unlike jet, trains, airplanes and ships which is very expensive to acquire.

Speed trains offers a very fast means of rail transport and can run between countries.
Rail transportation is cheaper for commuters compared to other modes of transportation. It may be considered as a national necessity because it helps the poor.
