What are Elements?

Everything in our world is composed of one or more elements. For instance:

The atmosphere is composed of elements like nitrogen, oxygen and noble gases.

Humans are composed of elements like carbon (C), iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl) and so on

Various materials and objects are made of elements. For instance:

  • Plastic and Nylons contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, sulphur, chlorine and so on.
  • Sand contain the elements silicon and oxygen.
  • Cotton is made up of elements like oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and so on.

In chemistry, an element may be defined as the simplest form of a substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means.

Consider the instance below:

When one attempts to split a pure gold (element) into particles (or tiny pieces), all they see is the same thing (gold) on each particle, nothing else.

Elements are naturally occurring in the universe. In fact, life is present on earth because of the type of elements found in it.

Before we list on some notable points concerning elements, it's a good idea to understand their careful arrangement on the periodic table.

  1. The periodic table is a table that shows all the elements present on earth.

  2. Each element has a unique name and chemical symbol. They are displayed in an organized manner on the periodic table.
  3. Each elements have got its unique atomic number BUT certain elements called isotopes have got the same atomic number.

    Atomic number is defined as the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.

    Isotopy is a phenomenon whereby atoms of the same element have the same atomic number different mass number.

    It is the number(s) of protons that defines or make unique an element.

    For instance, Hydrogen is hydrogen simply because it has only one proton. Oxygen is oxygen because it has eight protons.

  4. Most elements have got their unique mass number BUT certain elements called isobars have got the same mass number.

    Isobars are elements that have different atomic number but same mass number.

  5. All pure elements are pure substance. This will imply that elements cannot be splitted into something different. For instance, if you attempt to split pure elemental gold (Au), all you'll keep seeing within it is the same gold; nothing else.

  6. Metallic elements are always found in their impure state. They are termed as ores (in their impure state). Metallic ores can be separated via electrolysis.
