Let's begin by understanding what self-esteem really is.
Self-esteem can simply be referred to as a personal reflection of one's overall self worth. The personal experiences that accounts for a person's self-esteem will include his or her experiences, health status, financial capacity and level of reasoning or mentality.

One is considered to have a low self-esteem if he or she constantly feels a lack of confidence and inferiority complex within himself or herself.
A low self-esteem can be potentiality harmful to an individual both emotionally and socially. (This is also true for one with a very high self-esteem). People with low self-esteem will often see others as better, stronger and more competent than themselves.

According to research, the tendency of children to end up in low self-esteem can be increased if they are often bullied in school and at home. Also, a child who is unfairly critisized for everything he or she does will eventually end up in a state of low self-esteem.
Note: The frequent punishing of a child accompanied with a lack of love from parents and teachers will consequently lead to low self-esteem in children.

On average, Self-esteem is expected to be relatively high in children while it declines gradually during old age.
In various instances, it has been observed that low self-esteem in young girls (teenagers) increases in proportion to how they conceive their bodily image.
