Child marriage may be defined as a formal or an informal union between a child below the age of 18 and another person who can either be an adult or a child.
Child marriage has its root in gender inequality, culture and tradition, illiteracy and poverty; as they have all played major roles in fostering it.

Most of the child marriages occur between the girl child and a man. This can have devastating effects on the girl child. For this reason, child marriage is considered as one of the harmful traditional practices in social studies.
Harmful traditional practices is defined as those forms of acceptable cultural practices which has an overall negative effect on its victims which include boys, girls, women, men and infants; thus obstructing their fundamental human rights and gender equality.
Child marriage must be discouraged since it always affect negatively the child involved. Regardless, it is practiced more in some rural communities in Africa; and is generally considered as an abuse on a child's fundamental human rights.

Since the young females (below age 18) are always the victim of a child marriage, they are therefore robbed of their childhood and are made to forcedly live with a man they never knew. Apparently, the affected girl child forced into the so-called child marriage was never ready for such in the first place.

Note: A boy child married to an adult woman is also an instance of child marriage.
A 2018 data from UNICEF showed that about 21 percent of young women globally (20 to 24 years of age) were married as children (child marriage). However, this percentage value keeps decreasing as the years go by; and that's a good thing.

There is a high chance of the child dropping out of school; and this may prove devastating for the rest of the child's life.

Child pregnancy may likely result from a child marriage. This may lead to pregnancy related issues for the girl child involved; and in some cases, death.
The baby conceived in a child marriage may be born prematurely; and may die as a result. This can have traumatic effects on the mental health of the girl child.
The spouse may sexually abuse and even rape the child involved in child marriage.
There is a higher chance of being beaten by their spouse especially when a girl child is involved in such marriage.

The young girl may become a slave in the marriage because she has little or no say in terms of decision making.

The child may run away from the marriage when they come to their senses; thus resulting into a failed marriage. The chances of a divorce in child marriage is about 70 - 80 percent.

Social Studies is defined as an integrated study on the interaction of human beings with their physical and social environments.
We can think of our environment as everything that surrounds us at any point in time. For instance, the soil, air, your clothes, phone and everything surrounding you right now are all part of your environment. (That is, they make up your environment).
Physical environment describes every visible thing around us. It could be water, air, soil, clothes, phones or all other things found around us.
Social environment on the other hand describes the various social roles or positions that influence an individual or a group. It is represented in our culture, norms, values, the people and various institutions with whom we interact with. Meanwhile, understand that social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and the likes present a social environment where people can interact with one another regardless their geographical location around the world.
