A router is defined as a hardware (networking) device that receives, analyzes and forward packets between computer networks. They can be classified into different types based on their physical appearance, connectivity and functionalities.
In this article, wired and wireless routers will be explained.
A wired router connects directly to end devices (e.g computers and VoIP phones) or intermediary devices like switches and other routers through a cable at both end of each device.
In order to access external networks, one of the ports in a wired router is connected via a cable to a modem. This facilitates the sending and receiving of data packets from the internet. In this regard, wired routers typically supports Network Address Translation (NAT).
Network Address Translation is a concept that allows multiple end devices to connect to the internet through a shared Internet Protocol (IP) Address.
The image below shows a D-Link wired router with the blue cables connecting to its ethernet interfaces (or ports) linking end devices (e.g computer and printers) while the white cable connects to a modem. Meanwhile, understand that the interface to the modem connects the home network to the internet:
Wired routers have firewalls built within them to filter traffic (packets) coming from or going to malicious network destinations.
Unlike the wired router, a wireless router connects to end devices without any form of cables. To achieve this, it has antennae which broadcast wirelessly, while also receiving signals from end devices.
A wireless router may simply be termed a router that provides the functions of a wireless access point. This wireless access point can be used to create a small Local Area Network (LAN), while also providing access to remote networks through the internet.
The image below shows a wireless router that can transmit data at 900 megabytes per second on a 5G network and 300 megabytes per second on a 2.4G network.
Wireless routers are used for establishing a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). They also support NAT and have firewalls within them. Importantly, they can effectively act as a wireless access point.
Interestingly, some wireless routers may be used to create a wired LAN. This is true because such wireless routers contain ethernet interfaces for cable connection to end devices. As said earlier, they can also be used to create a wireless-only LAN, or wired and wireless network simultaneously. To achieve this, wireless routers do come with one or more ethernet ports (interfaces). These interface controllers are typically fast ethernet or gigabit ethernet ports which are integrated into the hardware of the wireless router. An instance is shown in the image below:
It is worthy of note to state that all wireless routers must possess one or more wireless network interface controllers. This is an important factor that make it a wireless access point. Also, universal serial bus (USB) ports may also be present in wireless routers. The USB ports connect directly to devices like desktops, external hard drives and printers. They may be used as a shared resource on the LAN.

Computer Network is a group of computers that are linked to each other such that they can share resources.
Generally, these groups of computers that form a network are called nodes.
Some of these nodes will function to store information which will be served to other computers. The nodes that function to store and serve such information are known as servers.
Some of the computers (nodes) will request information from the server. The computers that functions to request information from the server are known as clients.
The internet and the world wide web (www) isn't the same thing.
The internet is formed from the joining or linking of different networks.
For instance, Google's network, Facebook's network and Yahoo's network are among the many other networks that make up the internet.
World Wide Web on the other hand is a collection of linked pages (for instance, this page you're on).

Personal Area Network (PAN): An instance is a Bluetooth connection between two devices.
