Fraud as a social problem in Nigeria:

Fraud is defined as an act of deception and trickery perpetrated through an intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another person, group of persons or an organization to part with something of value, especially money, thus gaining some dishonest advantage through the process.

Fraud is a massive problem in Nigeria. It runs in various sectors of the country. Below are some of these sectors alongside their corresponding fraudulent instances.

 

  • Banking: The 2021 financial statements of Access Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTCO), First City Monument Bank (FCMB), and Wema Bank showed that a total of ₦1.77 billion was lost to fraudulent activities involving the banks’ employees and consumers in 2021.

  • Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC): In October 2022, a British court ordered Glencore, (a commodities company) to pay over $313 million for bribing NNPC officials and four other African countries through oil contracts deals.


  • Judiciary: In November 2022, judiciary workers in kogi state of Nigeria was discovered to have carried out a fraud of ₦4.8million by the kogi state high court.

  • Education: ₦36 million was said to have been swallowed by a snake in the vault of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), in one of its state branches. This bizzare statement made by a JAMB staff named Philomina Chieshe trended in Nigeria and beyond.

    However, a statement released by JAMB says the disappearance of such money (₦36 million) is criminal and fraudulent on the part of the staff.

Other segments where fraud had been recorded in Nigeria include the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), during political elections, highly placed political offices, chat applications, and even the local Nigerian markets (through the purchase of fake products).

 

A popular type of fraud named after the Nigerian criminal code is termed '419'. The number '419' refers to the section of the Nigerian Criminal Code (NCC) concerning fraud alongside the disciplinary action, charges and penalties for the offenders.

Interestingly, fraudulent persons are simply termed as a '419' in Nigeria.

The 419 scam, also termed as 'Nigerian letter fraud' or 'advanced fee fraud' is a scam perpetrated from Nigeria. In this case, an email, letter or fax is sent to someone in another country, typically the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK) or other European countries.

 

Generally, fraud can be perpetrated through a variety of ways. Below are some methods of defrauding people:

  1. Through unsolicited emails.

  2. Through romance scams.

  3. Through fake links.

  4. Through ponzi schemes.

  5. Through the purchase of fake products.

  6. Through debit and credit cards.

  7. Through funds transfer schemes.

  8. Through loan sharks.

  9. Through fake popup messages.

  10. Through lottery fraud.

  11. Through fake credit notifications.

An important agency in fighting specialized fraud in Nigeria is the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFD). However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are crucial agencies in fighting economic and politically motivated fraud in Nigeria.

The aforementioned special fraud agencies focuses on fraudulent cases that involves a large sum of money. Also, they target fraudulent public officers including those with immunity, for instance, the governors and other high ranking political officers. Therefore, these agencies function to prosecute fraudulent public and private individuals, including business organizations.

Social Studies is defined as an integrated study on the interaction of human beings with their physical and social environments.

We can think of our environment as everything that surrounds us at any point in time. For instance, the soil, air, your clothes, phone and everything surrounding you right now are all part of your environment. (That is, they make up your environment).

Physical environment describes every visible thing around us. It could be water, air, soil, clothes, phones or all other things found around us.

Social environment on the other hand describes the various social roles or positions that influence an individual or a group. It is represented in our culture, norms, values, the people and various institutions with whom we interact with. Meanwhile, understand that social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and the likes present a social environment where people can interact with one another regardless their geographical location around the world.

The causes of environmental problems can be either natural or man-made.

Natural causes of environmental problems will include the followings:

Some of the man-made causes of environmental problems are:
