What is Family?

Family refers to a group of two or more persons related by blood, birth, marriage, adoption, or law; who may, or may not live together in the same building. The fact that they are related in one of the aforementioned ways makes them family, regardless their location of presence.

Please read on culture and its components here.

Indeed, the family is the smallest social unit (or most basic unit) of a society. Interestingly, its formation process (or trainings received by the children, and parents alike) will determine the society they dwell in. However, married couples without children will still make up a family all by themselves.

You can read on values and norms here.

Types of Family

Family can be put into the following types: These are:

  • Nuclear (also called conjugal, immediate, atomic, or elementary) family

  • Extended family

  • Blended family

Th nuclear family consists of a man, his wife and with or without children. The couples in a nuclear family may be married or not, while the child (or children) can be either birthed or adopted.

Typically, the members of a nuclear family resides in the same apartment, and are often dependent on one another.

You can read on culture and social values on marriage here.

An extended family is one that goes beyond the father, mother and children. It includes other relations like grandparents, niece, uncle, cousin, nephews, and so on.

Over time, an extended family member may live with a nuclear family. For instance, grandparents may eventually live with the children as a result of old age.

Please read on the forms of marriage here.

A blended family consists of a couple, alongside the children they have had together, and each spouse's child (or children) from previous relationships. As an instance, a single mother of one child who marries another husband is considered to have a blended family with her new husband. The husband in this instance may also have children from a previous relationship with another woman.

You can read on child marriage and its consequences here.

Social Studies is defined as an integrated study on the interaction of human beings with their physical and social environments.

Physical environment describes every visible thing around us. It could be water, air, soil, clothes, phones or all other things found around us.

Social environment on the other hand describes the various social roles or positions that influence an individual or a group. It is represented in our culture, norms, values, the people and various institutions with whom we interact with. Meanwhile, understand that social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and the likes present a social environment where people can interact with one another regardless their geographical location around the world.
