What does sovereign mean?

If we were to look up the word "sovereign" in the dictionary, we would find words like:

superior, greatest, supreme, ruler, absolute, unlimited, unrestricted, unrestrained, unbounded, boundless, infinite, ultimate, total, unconditional, full, utter, paramount and crowned head.

For me, I will simply summarize it to mean "God is at the top of all".

There is absolutely nothing that "happens" or "will happen" or "had happened" or "is happening" in the universe that is outside of God's knowledge, influence, control and authority. This is a fact because:

God is the ultimate source of all power and authourity.

He is the source of everything "that existed", "that will exist in the future", and "that which is existing right now".

No one can completely know all of God's attribute, but one thing is for sure and that's the fact that all God's attribute make him sovereign. Please read on the Attributes of God here.

After my research, I came out with 5 facts that attribute only to God as being Sovereign and these should be the reasons why you must never lose hope.

Note: The fact that God is sovereign should be the reason that no human being should commit suicide; no matter the pain, disappointment, betrayal or sorrow.

Below are some points that express the sovereignty of God:

1. God is above all things and before all things

  • He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. He is immortal, and He is present everywhere so that everyone can know Him (Revelation 21:6).
  • Who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness (Isiah 40:23)
  • Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure (Psalm 147:5).
  • God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness (Genesis 1-4)
  • For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and does not take a bribe (Deuteronomy 10:17)
  • Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know! (Proverbs 30:4)

2. God is the creator of all things

  • God is the creator of all things, both in heaven and on earth, both visible and invisible (Colossians 1:16).
  • Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable (Isaiah 40:28).
  • Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created (Revelation 4:11)
  • For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him (Colosians 1:16).
  • You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the ground (Psalm: 104-30).

Please read on the Biblical account of God's creation here.

3. God knows all things past, present, and future (Omniscient)

  • God knows all things past, present, and future. There is no limit to His knowledge, for God knows everything completely before it even happens (Romans 11:33).
  • Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5).
  • Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite (Psalm 147:5).
  • Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure (psalm 147:5).
  • And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account (Hebrews 4:13).

4. God can do all things and accomplish all things

  • God can do all things and accomplish all things. Nothing is too difficult for Him, and He orchestrates and determines everything that is going to happen in your life, in my life, in Nigeria, and throughout the world. Whatever He wants to do in the universe, He does, for nothing is impossible with Him (Jeremiah 32:17).
  • Our God is in the Heavens; He does as He pleases (Psalm 115:3).
  • Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, 'My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure' (Isaiah 46:9-10).
  • The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these (Isaiah 47:5).
  • He stretches out the north over empty space And hangs the earth on nothing (Job 26:7).

5. God is in control of all things and rules over all things

  • God is in control of all things and rules over all things. He has power and authority over nature, earthly kings, history, angels, and demons. (Psalm 103:19).
  • And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! (Matthew 6:28-30).
  • The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger (Job: 1:12).
  • Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, Or loose the cords of Orion? "Can you lead forth a constellation in its season, And guide the Bear with her satellites? "Do you know the ordinances of the heavens, Or fix their rule over the earth? (Job 38:31-33).

So if you ever felt like giving up because you're going through difficult moments, Don't worry much, just pray and relax; for God is Sovereign. "God is at the to of all your worries"
Romans 8:28 promises that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.
