Water and air are among the various modes of transportation; the others being land (road and rails), pipeline and human porterage.

The means of transport through air include airplanes, helicopters, jets, spaceships and rockets.

Ships, speed boat, ferries and canoes are some of the means of transportation on water.

Water mode of transportation includes the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, canals, lagoons and so on.

Advantages of Water Transport

  1. Bulky goods and large volume of cargo can be transported from one country to another.

  2. It is considered the safest mode of transport alongside railway transportation.

  3. Water bodies are the free gifts of nature; hence they don’t require any cost of construction and maintenance.

  4. Water transport is not affected by natural events like bad weather, flood and rains.

  5. Water transport is quite flexible in its services since it can be easily routed to other destinations if need be.

  6. The availability of water mode of transportation within a city can help solve traffic congestion within such city.

  7. Water transport provide a means for nations to defend their territory against their enemies.

  8. With regards to the distance it covers, water transportation is the cheapest.

  9. Water transport has a natural route network, thus traffic congestion are often absent.

  10. Compared to land and air modes of transportation, its pollution rate is the least among all.


Disadvantages of Water Transportation

  1. With regards to ship, water a very slow means of transport.  It’s so slow that goods can take weeks or even months before they reach their destination.

  2. Ships are expensive to build and maintain.

  3. Pilfering is seen on a large scale at seaports.

  4. Water canals can be very expensive to construct and maintain.

  5. Huge ships require deep anchorage and modern equipment for loading and unloading; which can be quite expensive to build and maintain.

  6. Water transportation does not get bulky goods to their destination. Such goods will still need to be transported over land.

  7. Tracking the progress of goods can be somewhat difficult. Some people will actually use this as a means of scamming their clients.


Advantage of Air Transport

  1. It is a very fast means of transportation. It is often considered as the fastest means of transportation.

  2. In many occasions, it is the only means of reaching certain parts of the world.

  3. Flight schedules are strictly adhered to even when the aircrafts are not filled to capacity.

  4. It is a great means of speedily transporting perishable and light goods within and outside a country.

  5. Since the air is a free space, no capital in needed in the construction of its track.

  6. No physical barrier is present in air transportation.

  7. Air transport is very important in the security of a country. Certain aricrafts are utilized by various countries to defend their territories against terrorists.

  8. Air transport offers better comfort to passengers during their journey.

  9. Airplanes are useful in agriculture since they can be used in the aerial spray of pesticides and insecticides on a large farmland.

  10. Air transportation facilitates communication by rapidly moving parcels across the country.

  11. No form of traffic congestion is encountered in air transportation.

  12. Air transportation is the only means through which scientist can fly into space and other planets.


Disadvantages of Air Transport

  1. The delivery of goods must first be at the air terminals before it can be conveyed through road transport to where it is needed.

  2. Bad weather may disrupt flights, causing delays and may even lead to flight cancellations.

  3. The average citizen finds it difficult to own an aircraft because it is very expensive.

  4. The building of standard airports can be capital intensive since it’s a capital project.

  5. Aircrafts need permission to takeoff and permission to land; and this may cause some slight delays.

  6. The people who work at airports suffer from noise pollution.

  7. Most airports are sited away from the city centers and as a result, the long trips from airport to city centers can be a waste of time and resources, especially for local flights.

  8. Aircrafts have a limitation to the load they can carry because of its design and specifications.

  9. Air transportation is the most expensive means of transportation, even for the economy class. Only the few rich can comfortably afford the business class and first class flights.

  10. Air transportation is the most risky mode of transportation because a small technical issue may result to substantial loss of lives.
