Expressing Fractions

Expressing one quantity as a fraction of another simply means to make a correct fraction of a given values in a question.

To correctly express one quantity as a fraction of another, place the first quantity as the top number (numerator) and the second quantity (the whole) as the bottom number (denominator), and simplify the fraction if need be. However, ensure that the quantities are in the same units, then simplify the fraction if possible.

Note: The numerator in a fraction shows the part number while the denominator shows the whole number. For example, to express 1 as a fraction of 2, it becomes 1/2. 1 is the part number in this instance, while 2 is the whole number.

Please read on the conversion of fractions to decimals here.

Worked Examples on Expressing Fractions

Example 1
  • Express 4 as a fraction of 12

Solution

Fraction = 4/12

14/123

  • 1/3

Example 2

A class of 40 students comprise of 25 boys and 15 girls. Express the number of boys and girls as fraction in relation to the class.

Solution

Fraction of boys in class = 25/40

525/408

  • 5/8

Fraction of girls in class = 15/40

315/408

  • 3/8

Example 3
  • Express 50cm as a fraction of 5m

Solution

Convert to same units. Let's convert meters to centimeters in this instance

5m = 500cm

Let's express 50cm as a fraction of 500cm

Fraction = 50/500

150/50010

  • 1/10

Example 4
  • A candidate scored 32 marks out of 80. Find the percentage score?

Solution

Fraction -> 32/80

  • Fraction = 2/5

To find the percentage score, multiply the fraction by 100.

2/5 × 100 = 200/5

40200/51

  • Percentage score = 40%

Example 5
  • A fraction contains 400 oranges and 40 are bad. Calculate the percentage of the good and bad oranges.

Solution

To calculate for good oranges, fist find the number of good oranges:

Total oranges - bad oranges = good oranges

400 - 40 = 360 good oranges

Fraction of good oranges = 360/400

Fraction of good oranges = 9/10

Percentage of good oranges = 9/10 × 100 = 900/10

90900/101

  • Percentage of good oranges = 90%

Calculate for bad oranges:

Fraction of bad oranges = 40/400

Fraction of bad oranges = 1/10

Percentage of bad oranges = 1/10 × 100

100/10

Percentage of bad oranges = 10%

Example 6
  • What fraction of 6 weeks is 6 days?

Solution

1 week -> 7 days

6 weeks -> y days

Cross multiply

y days × 1 = 6 × 7

y = 42 days

Therefore, 6 weeks = 42 days

To calculate the fraction of 42 days in 6 days;

6/42

16/427

  • 1/7

Example 7
  • What fraction of 1.5km is 440m?

Solution

Convert to same unit. Let's convert meter to kilometer in this instance.

1000m -> 1km

440m -> y km

Cross multiply

y km × 1000m = 440 x 1km

Make y the subject of the formula

y km = 440 × 1/1000

y = 440/1000

y km = 11/25km or 0.44km

Therefore, 440m = 11/25km or 0.44km

Let's express 1.5km as a fraction of 0.44km

0.44/1.5 = 44/1500

22/75

Example 8
  • Express 4mm as a fraction of 10cm

Solution

Convert to same unit. Let's convert mm to cm.

10mm -> 1cm

4mm -> y cm

Cross multiply

y cm × 10 = 4 × 1

Make y the subject of the formula

y cm = 4 × 1/10

y cm = 4/10

y cm = 2/5cm or 0.4cm

Therefore 4mm = 0.4cm

Let's express 0.4cm as a fraction of 10cm

0.4/10 = 4/100

  • 1/25

Example 9
  • Express 1 minute 30 seconds as a fraction of 1 hour.

Solution

Convert to same unit. Let's convert 1minute 30 seconds to seconds.

60 seconds = 1 minute

1 minute 30 seconds = 60s + 30s = 90s

Let's convert 1 hour to seconds

60 minutes = 1 hour

60 seconds = 1 minute

1 hour to seconds = 60 × 60 = 3600 seconds.

Now, let's express 90 seconds as a fraction of 3600 seconds

90/3600

  • 1/40

Example 10
  • Express 75ml as a fraction of 1 litre.

Solution

Convert to same unit. Let's convert liter to ml in this instance.

1000ml -> 1l

Therefore, 1liter = 1000ml

Now, let's express 75ml as a fraction of 1000ml

75/1000

  • 3/40

Example 11
  • In a mixed school, there are y boys and z girls. What fraction of the students are girls.

Solution

Total number of students= y + z

Fraction of boys in the school = number of boys / Total students

  • z/y + z

Amazing facts in Mathematics

The opposite sides of a dice will always give a sum of seven

31,556,926 seconds makes one year

From 0 through 1000, the only number that has the letter 'a' in it is 'one thousand'

÷

The division symbol '÷' is actually called an obelus

Four is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same number of letters as the number (4) itself

40 is spelt as forty and not 'fourty'. It is the only number that is spelt with letters arranged in alphabetical order

An odd number is a number that cannot be divisible by 2.

Every odd number has an 'e' in its spelling. They include:

  • One
  • Three
  • Five
  • Seven
  • Nine

555 in Thailand sounds like 'hahaha'. This is because the number '5' means 'ha' in Thailand

In mathematics, 10! means 10 factorial. Below is its calculation:

10! = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 3628800

Interestingly, 3628800 seconds is the same as 42 days

42 days is the same as 6 weeks

We can therefore say that 10! equals 6 weeks or 3628800 seconds in mathematics

When you multiply 111,111,111 by 111,111,111; the result equals 12,345,678,987,654,321

Notable points in Mathematics

Let's use algebra to explain the simple statement below:

I am a number. When you subtract 3 from me, the result is 9. what number am I ?

Of course we know the answer is 12. You probably guessed it from your mind because it was that simple. The truth is, We could have a much more complicated statement of such; and that is where algebra comes into play.

Now, to apply algebra in the above statement, we use letters or alphabets to represent the unknown number(s). So using algebra, we can write:

  • Let the number be y

  • y - 3 = 9

  • y = 9 + 3

  • y = 12

Sides of a right angle triangle - Len Academy

The image above shows a right angled triangle. The angle of the above right triangle is denoted as θ. Below are some points to note:

Hypotenuse is always the longest side of the triangle.

Opposite is the side opposite the angle (θ)

Adjacent is the shorter side next to the angle (θ)

Each of Sin θ, cos θ and tan θ are the ratio of sides of the right triangle. They are calculated by using the formula (margic word) sohcahtoa:

Sohcahtoa - Len Academy

soh

Sin θ = Opposite/Hypotenuse

cah

Cos θ = Adjacent/Hypotenuse

toa

Tan θ = Opposite/Adjacent
