Linear Equation

A linear equation is an equation with one or more variables raised to the power of 1, and will form a straight line when plotted on a graph.

The highest power of the variable in a linear equation is 1. When a linear equation has only one variable, it is termed as a one-degree equation. However, some linear equations isn't one-degree since they may have two, or even three variables.

Below is an instance of a linear equation:

x + 5 = 12

In the above instance, x is the only variable present (unknown value), while 5 and 12 are the constants.

Please read on word problems leading to algebraic expressions here.

Steps in Solving Linear Equations

Below are steps in solving linear equations:

  • Begin by identifying the variables (or unknowns) and the constants.

  • Rearrange the equation by collecting like terms such that the variables will be on one side of the equality sign while the constant will be on the other side of the equality sign.

  • When crossing the variable or constant to the other side of the equality sign, their minus or plus sign changes. For example, when crossing the value "-3" to the other side of the equality sign, it becomes "+3". Similarly, when crossing "+3" to the other side of the equality sign, it becomes "-3".

  • Solve for the value of the variable.

Please read on the use of BODMAS in mathematics here.

Worked Examples on Linear Equation

Solve the following linear equation:

Example 1
  • 18 + x = 7

Solution

Rearrange and collect like terms

x = 7 - 18

  • Answer: x = -11

Example 2
  • 18 - x = 7

Solution

Rearrange and collect like terms

18 - 7 = x

  • Answer: 11 = x or x = 11

Example 3
  • 24 = 17 - x

Solution

Rearrange and collect like terms

24 - 17 = -x

7 = -x

Divide both sides by -1

7/-1 = -x/-1

  • Answer: -7 = x or x = -7

Example 4
  • p = 28 - p

Solution

Rearrange and collect like terms

p + p = 28

2p = 28

Divide both sides by 2

21p/21 = 2814/21

  • Answer: p = 14

Example 5
  • x/4 = 5

Solution

Cross multiply

x × 1 = 4 × 5

  • Answer: x = 20

Example 6
  • 24/x = 4/1

Solution

Cross multiply

24 × 1 = x × 4

24 = 4x

Divide both sides by 4

246/41 = 41x/41

  • Answer: 6 = x or x = 6

Example 7
  • 1y/4 = 7

Solution

Cross multiply

1 × y × 1 = 7 × 4

  • Answer: y = 28

Example 8
  • 1x/4 = 2 1/2

Solution

Convert the improper fraction to mixed fraction

1x/4 = 5/2

Cross multiply

1 × x × 2 = 5 × 4

2× = 20

Divide both sides by 2

21x/21 = 2010/21

  • Answer: x = 10

Example 9
  • 3x + 10 = - 50

Solution

Rearrange and collect like terms

3x = -50 - 10

3x = -60

Divide both sides by 3

31x/31 = -6020/31

  • Answer: x = -20

Example 10
  • 0 = 6z - 11

Solution

Rearrange and collect like terms

0 + 11 = 6z

11 = 6z

Divide both sides by 6

11/6 = 6z/6

  • Answer: 11/6 = z or  1 5/6 = z or z = 1 5/6

Amazing facts in Mathematics

The opposite sides of a dice will always give a sum of seven

31,556,926 seconds makes one year

From 0 through 1000, the only number that has the letter 'a' in it is 'one thousand'

÷

The division symbol '÷' is actually called an obelus

Four is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same number of letters as the number (4) itself

40 is spelt as forty and not 'fourty'. It is the only number that is spelt with letters arranged in alphabetical order

An odd number is a number that cannot be divisible by 2.

Every odd number has an 'e' in its spelling. They include:

  • One
  • Three
  • Five
  • Seven
  • Nine

555 in Thailand sounds like 'hahaha'. This is because the number '5' means 'ha' in Thailand

In mathematics, 10! means 10 factorial. Below is its calculation:

10! = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 3628800

Interestingly, 3628800 seconds is the same as 42 days

42 days is the same as 6 weeks

We can therefore say that 10! equals 6 weeks or 3628800 seconds in mathematics

When you multiply 111,111,111 by 111,111,111; the result equals 12,345,678,987,654,321

Notable points in Mathematics

Let's use algebra to explain the simple statement below:

I am a number. When you subtract 3 from me, the result is 9. what number am I ?

Of course we know the answer is 12. You probably guessed it from your mind because it was that simple. The truth is, We could have a much more complicated statement of such; and that is where algebra comes into play.

Now, to apply algebra in the above statement, we use letters or alphabets to represent the unknown number(s). So using algebra, we can write:

  • Let the number be y

  • y - 3 = 9

  • y = 9 + 3

  • y = 12

Sides of a right angle triangle - Len Academy

The image above shows a right angled triangle. The angle of the above right triangle is denoted as θ. Below are some points to note:

Hypotenuse is always the longest side of the triangle.

Opposite is the side opposite the angle (θ)

Adjacent is the shorter side next to the angle (θ)

Each of Sin θ, cos θ and tan θ are the ratio of sides of the right triangle. They are calculated by using the formula (margic word) sohcahtoa:

Sohcahtoa - Len Academy

soh

Sin θ = Opposite/Hypotenuse

cah

Cos θ = Adjacent/Hypotenuse

toa

Tan θ = Opposite/Adjacent
