Characteristics of tropical rainforest:

  1. As the name suggests, it rains throughout the year. The raining periods have 2 peaks. You can think of the 'peak periods' as the times of highest rainfall within a year.

    The 2 peaks within the year when we have the highest rainfall are referred to as double maxima.

  3. The overall temperature in a tropical rainforest lie between 25oC – 37oC. However, there is a brief annual range of cold period with a temperature of 2oC – 3oC.

  4. The tropical rainforest have a very high relative humidity.

  5. The tropical rainforest is a home to a large variety of animals. In fact, 80% of the known animal species are found here. Examples of animals found here include various reptiles, insects, birds and many more.

An epiphyte is a non-parasitic plant that grows on another plant. It derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain water, or from debris accumulating around it. In addition, epiphytes carry out photosynthesis: (that is; they can manufacture their own food). Examples are moss and orchids.

Pufferfish - Len Academy

Pufferfish contain a toxin called tetrodotoxin. This makes them foul tasting and poisonous to predators. Tetrodotoxin is about 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide, and there is enough toxin in one pufferfish to kill 30 adult humans. Unfortunately, there isn't any known antidote to this poison.

Interestingly, a delicacy in Japan (called fugu) is made from pufferfish. This meal is very expensive, and must be prepared by trained and licensed chefs. An improper preparation of fugu may lead to the customer's death. Sadly, such deaths are recorded annually
