Types of Mixture:

A mixture can be generally categorized into 2 types. These are:

  • Homogeneous Mixture
  • Heterogeneous Mixture

1. Homogenous Mixtures

The prefix homo means sameness. A mixture is considered to be homogeneous when it has a uniform composition and appearance all through. For instance, the mixture of salt and water (saline) is a homogeneous mixture because the salt dissolves completely in water.

Note: The liquid forms of homogenous mixtures whose particles are completely dissolved are referred to as solutions. The solid to be dissolved in a solution is referred to as the solute while the liquid is termed the solvent. In short, the solvent dissolves the solute to form solution which is always a homogenous mixture.

In chemistry, a colloid is a homogeneous mixture with intermediate sized particles. It lies in the borderline between a solution and a suspension.

Although the solution of a homogeneous mixture appears to be physically pure, they are still impure because they are mixtures. Mixtures are not pure substances but elements are.

Other examples of homogenous mixtures include:

  • Air: Air is a mixture of gases. The gases that make up air include nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon(IV)oxide, neon, Krypton, helium, xenon, hydrogen, and water vapour.

  • Alloys: An alloy is a metal made formed from the combination of a metal and another element(s). In short, it is a mixture of a metal and another element. Examples of alloys include, steel (iron and carbon), brazz (copper + zinc), bronze (copper + tin), duralumin (aluminum + copper), solder (tin + lead + antimony) and so on.

  • Plastics: Plastic is a mixture of synthetic compounds. The elements that makes up plastic include carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine and sulphur. A plastic is considered a polymeric material because of its long chain.

  • Cement: Cement is considered as a homogenous mixture. It is made from elements like calcium, silicon, aluminium, oxygen and iron.
  • Bitumen: This is one of the the products obtained from the fractional distillation of petroleum. It is a homgenous mixture comprising mainly of carbon and hydrogen. Other elements that makes up bitumen include sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen and even metals.
  • Wood: Wood is a homogenous mixture comprising of elements like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, calcium, potassium, sulphur, nitrogen and magnesium.

2. Heterogenous Mixtures

A mixture is said to be heterogeneous if it's composed of different substances that do not dissolve. The substances that make up a heterogeneous mixture are often visible to the eye.

A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture comprising of large sized particles. The particles can be seen to settle down or sediment below the liquid. An instance of suspension is a mixture of water and sand. This suspension (mixture) can be separated via a technique termed sedimentation and decantation. The image below illustrates this:

In chemistry, hydrocarbons can be classified as either aliphatic or aromatic. Recently, both classifications of hydrocarbon were based on their structure rather than their origin.

Aliphatic hydrocarbons are put into three main groups according to the types of bonds they possess. These are:

  1. Alkanes

  2. Alkenes

  3. Alkynes

It's important to note the followings:

  • Alkanes have single bonds (only) in their structures.

  • Alkenes always have a carbon-carbon double bond present in their structure.

  • Alkynes always have a carbon-carbon triple bond present in their structure.


Aromatic hydrocarbons are classified into:

  • Arenes: They contain benzene ring as a structural unit. Below is the structure of a benzene ring.

  • Nonbenzenoid aromatic hydrocarbons: They possess special stability but lack a benzene ring as a structural unit.

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon and it's compounds.

Carbon is the focus of organic chemistry because it has a wide chemical diversity in the sense that it can combine with other carbon atoms to form a long chain of carbon molecule. This ability and process whereby carbon can form a long chain of itself is called catenation.

A major challenge encountered when calculating molecular mass is that it becomes difficult or impossible to calculate especially when the relative molecular mass of large molecules, polymers and macromolecules are involved.

Examples of large molecules (with indefinite molecular masses) include carbohydrates, cellulose and complex sugars.

The large molecules (above) have no specific chemical formula throughout their volume.

Understand that Relative Molecular Mass prove to be useful only when we calculate substances with small and definite molecular sizes. This was proven through the modifications of Dalton's atomic theory.

Calculate the Relative Molecular Mass of methane (CH4). (Carbon=12.001 and H=1.00794)

  • Molecular Mass = Atomic mass of carbon + Atomic mass of Hydrogen

  • Methane is composed of one atom of Carbon and 4 atoms of Hydrogen.

  • 12.001 + (1.00794 x 4)

Molecular Mass of Methane = 16.033 amu

Calculate the Relative Molecular Mass of water (H2O). (Oxygen=15.9994 and Hydrogen=1.00794)

  • Molecular Mass = Atomic mass of Hydrogen + Atomic mass of Oxygen

  • Water contains 2 atoms of Hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen.

  • (1.00794 x 2) + 15.9994

Molecular Mass of Water = 18.015 Da
