Number Base Multiplication

The multiplication of number bases is quite similar to base 10 multiplication. However, when multiplying number bases, if the multiplication product equals or exceeds the base, you carry over the whole number (quotient), while writing down the remainder. This procedure is repeated until the final result is reached. This implies that each digit comprising the base must be within the base; and not equal or above it.

Please read on the division of number bases here.

Note: The quotient is the carry-over, and the remainder is the digit you write down. Also, each digit making up your answer is always lesser than the base value.

Multiplication of number bases can also be achieved through base 10 conversion. This method is quite easier and preferable.

Please read on number base conversion here.

Worked Examples on Number Base Multiplication

Below are examples showing the step by step procedure in number base multiplication.

Example 1
  • 234 × 324

Solution

  • Step 1: Perform the first partial multiplication: that is 234 × 2

  • Step 2: Multiply the rightmost digit

2 × 3 = 6 (Since the result is greater than or equal to the base number, we'll divide it by the base number. That is; 6/4 = 1 R 2).

Write down 2 and carry 1

  • Step 3: Multiply the next digit and add the carry to the result

2 × 2 = 4

4 + 1= 5

5/4 = 1 R 1

Write down 1 and carry 1

  • Step 4: Since there's no other number to multiply, we also write down the carry, and that's 1

Write result for first partial multiplication by reading from bottom to top. That is; 1124

  • Step 5: Perform the second partial multiplication: that is 234 × 34

  • Step 6: Multiply the rightmost digit.

3 × 3 = 9

9/4 = 2 R 1

Write down 1 and carry 2

  • Step 7: Multiply the next digit and add the carry to the result

3 × 2 = 6

6 + 2 = 8

8/4 = 2 R 0

Write down 0 and carry 2

  • Step 8: Since there's no other number to multiply, we also write down the 2.

  • Step 9: Write result for second partial multiplication by reading from bottom to top. That is; 2014

Always add a single rightmost zero (0) to your second partial result since we multiply by tens digit. Our result becomes 20104

  • Step 10: Add the partial results
1124
20104
________
21224
  • Answer: 1124 + 20104 = 21224

Please read on the addition of number bases here.

Solution Through Base 10 Conversion

  • 234 - 324

  • Step 1: Convert 234 to base 10

(2 × 41) + (3 × 40)

8 + 3 = 1110

  • Step 2: Convert 324 to base 10

(3 × 41) + (2 × 40)

12 + 2 = 1410

  • Step 3: Multiply both base 10 results

11 × 14 = 15410

  • Step 4: Covert the base 10 result to base 4

154 ÷ 4 = 38 R 2

38 ÷ 4 = 9 R 2

9 ÷ 4 = 2 R 1

2 ÷ 4 = 0 R 2

  • Read remainder from bottom to top.

  • Answer: 21224

Example 2
  • 1112 × 1002

Solution

  • Step 1: Perform the first partial multiplication; that is 1112 × 0

0 × 1 = 0 (Since the result is less than the base number, we'll leave it as it is)

Write down 0

  • Step 3: Multiply the next digit

0 × 1 = 0

Write down 0

  • Step 4: Multiply the next digit

0 × 1 = 0

Write down 0

  • Step 6: Perform the second partial multiplication; that is 1112 × 02

  • Step 7: Our result from the second partial multiplication is the same as the first partial multiplication. We'll write it down as 0002

Always add a single rightmost zero (0) to your second partial result since we multiply by tens digit. Our result becomes 00002

  • Step 8: Perform the third partial multiplication; that is 1112 × 12

1 × 1 = 12

Write down 12

  • Step 11: Multiply the next digit

Amazing facts in Mathematics

The opposite sides of a dice will always give a sum of seven

31,556,926 seconds makes one year

From 0 through 1000, the only number that has the letter 'a' in it is 'one thousand'

÷

The division symbol '÷' is actually called an obelus

Four is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same number of letters as the number (4) itself

40 is spelt as forty and not 'fourty'. It is the only number that is spelt with letters arranged in alphabetical order

An odd number is a number that cannot be divisible by 2.

Every odd number has an 'e' in its spelling. They include:

  • One
  • Three
  • Five
  • Seven
  • Nine

555 in Thailand sounds like 'hahaha'. This is because the number '5' means 'ha' in Thailand

In mathematics, 10! means 10 factorial. Below is its calculation:

10! = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 3628800

Interestingly, 3628800 seconds is the same as 42 days

42 days is the same as 6 weeks

We can therefore say that 10! equals 6 weeks or 3628800 seconds in mathematics

When you multiply 111,111,111 by 111,111,111; the result equals 12,345,678,987,654,321

Notable points in Mathematics

Let's use algebra to explain the simple statement below:

I am a number. When you subtract 3 from me, the result is 9. what number am I ?

Of course we know the answer is 12. You probably guessed it from your mind because it was that simple. The truth is, We could have a much more complicated statement of such; and that is where algebra comes into play.

Now, to apply algebra in the above statement, we use letters or alphabets to represent the unknown number(s). So using algebra, we can write:

  • Let the number be y

  • y - 3 = 9

  • y = 9 + 3

  • y = 12

Sides of a right angle triangle - Len Academy

The image above shows a right angled triangle. The angle of the above right triangle is denoted as θ. Below are some points to note:

Hypotenuse is always the longest side of the triangle.

Opposite is the side opposite the angle (θ)

Adjacent is the shorter side next to the angle (θ)

Each of Sin θ, cos θ and tan θ are the ratio of sides of the right triangle. They are calculated by using the formula (margic word) sohcahtoa:

Sohcahtoa - Len Academy

soh

Sin θ = Opposite/Hypotenuse

cah

Cos θ = Adjacent/Hypotenuse

toa

Tan θ = Opposite/Adjacent

Circumference of a Circle - Len Academy

Circumference in mathematics means the distance around the edge of a circle (or a another curved surface).

Circumference is to circle or any other curved surface

Perimeter of a Rectangle - Len Academy

Perimeter means the distance around a square or rectangle or polygon.

Perimeter is to square or rectangle or polygon
