Agricultural Terms and Definitions:

This is a continuation of the agricultural terms and definitions for letters "P and Q".

  • Plant Litter

This is the accumulation of plant’s leaves, twigs, bark, stem, branches, fruits, seeds, flowers and other plant parts on the surface of the soil.

 

  • Plantations

This is a very large area of agricultural land on which one type of crop may be established through planting.

Examples of plantations are cotton plantations, tobacco plantation, sugar cane plantations and so on.

 

  • Plantlets

These are small plants or young plants that grows via vegetative propagation from the parent plant.

Note: Vegetative propagation is a form of asexual reproduction in plants.

  • Plantibodies

These are recombinant antibodies that are produced from genetically modified crops.

  • Plasmolysis

This is the shrinking of a living plant cell, animal cell or bacteria cell as a result of water loss from the cell cytoplasm to its environment; due to an outward osmotic water flow.

 

  • Plus Trees

These are trees in which their outward appearance are much bigger when compared to an average tree of the same species grown on a similar area of land.

Such plus trees may also be pest and disease resistant.

 

  • Pollen (Pollen Grains)

This is the male germ cell or gametophytes (or sex cell) in plants.

Pollen grains are present in the anther of a flower.

 

  • Pollen Rain

This is the fall of large amount of pollen grains and spores on a particular area.

 

  • Pollination

Pollination is the transfer of pollen (male gametes) from the anther of a flower to the stigma of a flower.

Pollination is of two types:

  1. Self Pollination: This is the transfer of pollen grain from the anther of a flower to the stigma (of the same flower or another flower) of the same plant.
  2. Cross Pollination: This is the transfer of pollen grain from the anther of a flower to the stigma of another flower on a different plant. Cross pollination may be brought about by wind, water and insects.

 

  • Pomology

This is a branch of botany that deals with the science or study of growing and cultivating fruit.

 

  • Postharvest Food Safety

This is the process of ensuring that food products from farmland are fit for human consumption.

 

  • Postharvest Treatment

The includes various processes like disease control, ripening initiation, preservation techniques, packing and grading of harvested crop in order to make them fresh for marketing and processing.

  • Poult

A poult is a young turkey of either sex and usually not more than two months of age.

 

  • Poultry

Poultry consist of domestic birds raised for meat and eggs.

 

  • Precooling

This is the process in which large quantities of fruits or vegetables are rapidly cooled prior to loading for shipment.

 

  • Productive Soil

This is a soil in which the chemical, physical, and biological conditions are ideal for the economic production of certain crops in a given area.

  • Primary Succession

This is the initial and natural development of the vegetation (usually plants or lichens) on a bare or barren area.

Note: Lichen is a symbiotic association between algae and fungi.

 

  • Pullet

A pullet is a female chicken less than 1 year old.

 

  • Q fever

This is an acute disease caused from infected dust and passed into cattle, sheep, goats and domestic animals.

The bacteria Coxiella burnetti present within these domestic animals are responsible for Q fever.

Peanuts are legumes and not nuts

NOTABLE POINTS IN Agricultural Science

Below are some common types of erosion:

  • Water Erosion: It is caused by rainfall and flooding on the topsoil. As a result of water erosion, some layers of the topsoil are lost.

  • Sheet Erosion: When an entire surface of land becomes eroded at a uniform (equal) level, such is referred to as sheet erosion. It is shown below:

  • Wind Erosion: It results from the actions of wind on a bare land. Wind erosion is often seen in deserts. Overgrazing and lack of vegetation cover will also enhance wind erosion on topsoil.

Soil erosion is defined as a process through which the topsoil is removed or moved from one point to another by agents like wind, water, man and animals.

Soil erosion occurs naturally (wind and water) and may also be facilitated by living organisms.

Soil erosion is more likely to occur on a sloppy land and land with no vegetation cover. When this occurs, the nutrient rich layer of the topsoil is washed away; and this ultimately results in fewer plants growing on such eroded soil.

Carnivorous plants are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients by consuming small animals, especially insects.

Carnivorous plants are also referred to as insectivorous plants.

Examples of carnivorous plants include sundew and Venus flytrap.
