Political apathy simply refers to a lack of interest in politics. It is a phenomenon that affects many individuals, particularly adults and teenagers. This detachment from political processes is troubling, as it can lead to a lack of representation, and a diminished voice in societal matters.
Political apathy is a multifaceted issue that stems from various sources, including insecurity, electoral malpractice, illiteracy, information overload, disillusionment, lack of representation, and social norms. It is crucial for students, parents, teachers, and families to understand these factors and work towards fostering a more engaged and informed society.
Please read on orderliness in civic education here.
In this article, we will explore some reasons for political apathy, using engaging examples and insights that resonate with various audiences.
Below are explanations on reasons for political apathy:
The insecurity of voters (and political violence) during election is a critical factor that discourages eligible voters from voting.
Voter insecurity is often present in terrorized countries where the electorate cannot cast their votes online; rather, they may have to travel long distances in an attempt to cast their vote. Unfortunately, the roads through which they travel are quite ladened with kidnappers and other death traps.
Also, these voters often queue up in a thug filled environment during the voting process. Meanwhile, understand that these so-called thugs are sponsored by politicians. Unfortunately, only one or two security personnel are often attached to the polling units, thus giving the political thugs an undue advantage in unleashing their mayhem and violence. This indeed adds an additional layer of risk to the voters, especially in volatile areas.
Please read on political power and its sources here.
In some cases, a specific group of people may be threatened (by political thugs) not to vote. As a result, they sit at home in other to secure their lives.
This is an important factor that discourages a large number of people from voting. In fact, it is a powerful tool used by corrupt politicians to win elections. In this regard, a good number of people don't vote because they are of the opinion that their vote does not count, hence making it an exercise in futility.
Election rigging had been happening way back in some countries. In fact, the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the originator of 'Afrobeats music' sang concerning this. He titled the song - 'Teacher don't teach me nonsense;' and below is a part of the song's lyrics:
Which kind election be dis? (Baba nla nonsense).
People no go vote (Baba nla nonsense).
Dem come get big big numbers (Baba nla nonsense)
Thousands to thousands (Baba nla nonsense)
Millions to billions (Baba nla nonsense)
Which kind election be dis? (Baba nla nonsense)
Please read on fraud as a contemporary social problem in Nigeria here.
During election rigging, figures are manipulated; and most often, the perpetrators go scot-free (without any consequences). Such election rigging thrives under the foundation of corruption; and unfortunately, billions of the people's money are spent by corrupt politicians to achieve this evil agenda towards their ascent to power.
This menace of election rigging can only be stopped by the determination of the people. To achieve this, they should strive to cast their votes, regardless the challenging situations, and wait to see it counted. Simply put, the people should be actively involved in the electoral process.
This is another factor that encourages political apathy. Illiteracy in this regard means a lack of knowledge about a particular subject (and that's politics in this case). Therefore, the people lack sufficient knowledge on the importance of casting their votes, or understanding that they can even be voted for. In fact, they barely understand that it is their right to vote and be voted for.
Most often, these reluctant voters (resulting from a lack of information) are bribed with peanuts to vote, thus selling this right of theirs out of sheer poverty and illiteracy.
Poverty and illiteracy are weapons utilized by corrupt politician to achieve their aims.
Please read on illiteracy and its causes here.
Another significant factor contributing to political apathy is disillusionment with politicians and the political system as a whole.
Many individuals feel that elected officials prioritize personal gain over the public good. For instance, a parent watching the news might become frustrated when they see leaders involved in scandals or making promises they fail to keep. This disappointment can lead to a belief that participating in elections or civic engagement is pointless, as individuals feel that they have no genuine choice in the matter.
You can read on the characteristics of democracy here.
A pervasive sense of distrust in political institutions can also breed political apathy. Many people, especially younger generations, feel that systems are rigged or that their participation will not create significant change.
Watching political debates that often devolve into mudslinging rather than productive conversations can foster a belief that engagement is futile.
You can read on reputation and how to build a good reputation here.
A sense of isolation and lack of representation is common among underrepresented groups, including minorities, low-income families, and young people.
For instance, a college student from a marginalized community may feel that their concerns about education funding or systemic inequalities are overlooked by politicians. This feeling of invisibility can lead to an entrenched belief that their voice doesn’t matter, which ultimately contributes to apathy.
You can read on one party system here.
Political issues can often be complex and convoluted, leading to a sense of overwhelm. For example, a family trying to understand healthcare policies might find themselves confused by intricate laws and varying viewpoints. This confusion can lead to a reluctance to engage in political discussions or advocacy, as individuals may feel they lack the knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully.
Please read on the forms of government here.
Social norms play a powerful role in shaping individuals' attitudes towards politics. In environments where political discussions are discouraged or regarding politics as boring, students may adopt a passive approach to their civic duties.
For instance, if a group of friends views political involvement as uncool, an individual may choose to disengage in order to fit in. This peer influence can perpetuate apathy, forming a cycle where political disengagement becomes the norm.
Please read on peer pressure explained with its types.
In today's digital age, individuals are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information. Social media platforms, news websites, and blogs continuously churn out content, making it difficult for people to discern credible news from misinformation.
For example, a high school student might scroll through their social media feed and encounter a myriad of conflicting opinions about a political issue, leading to confusion and eventually, disengagement. This constant noise can create a sense of helplessness, resulting in a belief that political involvement is futile.
Please read on reasons why political leaders fail their followers here.
By addressing the reasons behind political apathy, we can encourage active participation in civic life, ensuring that every voice, regardless of background, has the opportunity to be heard.
The following forms of political apathy should be addressed in other to achieve this. They include:
Unwillingness to vote during election.
Unwillingness to participate in political activities.
Unwillingness to exercise the right of peaceful demonstration.
Unwillingness to attend political campaigns.
Fear of reporting (or speaking up on) electoral anomalies.
In conclusion, through open discussions and community engagement, we can together build a healthier political landscape.
