Definition of Marriage

Marriage is defined as a cultural and legal union between a man and a woman, often performed in a religious environment, traditional setting, or in the court registry. It is also termed matrimony or wedlock.

With regards to religion, marriage is considered an institution ordained by God. In fact, it is the first of all institutions; and it took place just after the creation of man (Adam) and woman (Eve).

Please read the biblical account of God's creation here.

In this regard, marriage in itself is the very action that joins a man a woman together, making them husband and wife.

Types of marriage

We have various types (or forms) of marriage. They include the following:

  • Monogamy: The term 'mono' means 'one,' and 'gamy' imply 'marriage or union'. Hence, monogamy refers to the union of one man and one woman as husband and wife. This union may be done in the church, mosque, court, or traditionally.

  • Polygamy: This refers to a marital union whereby a man has more than one wife. This marriage was quite common in Africa during the precolonial era.
You can read on the forms of government here.

  • Polyandry: This is a marital union between a woman and more than one husband. Simply put, a woman marries more than one husband in polyandry.

  • Christian Marriage: This marriage is conducted by a pastor or priest, and marital vows are exchanged. It occurs in a church, backed up with an issuance of marriage certificate. Marital rings are exchanged, and the blessings of God is invoked upon the husband and wife. Monogamy is practised here.

  • Muslim Marriage: It is also termed 'nikah', and is conducted in the mosque, or the bride's house, in accordance to the principles of the holy quran. The nikah is the Islamic marriage ceremony, whereby the muslim couple ratify their marriage before God. They do this by signing the marriage contract in the presence of an imam, alongside two witnesses (at minimum). Polygamy may be practiced in muslim marriage.
You can read on values and norms here.

  • Court Marriage: As the name imply, court marriage is conducted by a court registrar within the court registry. It is often termed 'ordinance of marriage' (ordinance marriage) since a special license is issued by the principal registrar (called registrar general) to allow the conduction of marriage without much formality. However, marriage vows are taken by the couples, alongside the exchange of rings.

  • Inter-Ethnic Marriage: In this marriage, a person from one ethnic group marries his or her spouse from another ethnic group. For instance, a Yoruba man who marries an Igbo woman is said to practice inter-ethnic marriage. Meanwhile, understand that inter-ethnic marriage is somewhat different from exogamy (which is the act of marrying outside of one's own social group). Also, marital conversion refers to an act whereby one marriage partner converts to the other's religion in order to facilitate marriage.
Please read on culture and social values on religion here.

  • Intra-Ethnic Marriage: This is a marital union between a man and a woman from the same ethnic group. For instance, it is seen when a Yoruba man marries a Yoruba woman. Intra-ethnic marriage is somewhat different from endogamy, which is the act of marrying a spouse within one's own social group.

Physical environment describes every visible thing around us. It could be water, air, soil, clothes, phones or all other things found around us.

Social environment on the other hand describes the various social roles or positions that influence an individual or a group. It is represented in our culture, norms, values, the people and various institutions with whom we interact with. Meanwhile, understand that social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and the likes present a social environment where people can interact with one another regardless their geographical location around the world.
