Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is considered as one of the harmful traditional practices. It generally has a bad effect on those on which it had been carried out.
Female Genital Mutilation is defined as the partial or total removal of a girl or woman's external genitalia for traditional and cultural reasons which are nonmedical in nature.
Although, culture and tradition are fundamental to societies and ethnic groups, some of these unhealthy traditional practices (emanating from culture) must be completely eradicated due to it's damaging effects on the victims' health.
Many of the victims of female genital mutilation may have to live with its associated psychological, physical, emotional and even spiritual trauma for the rest of their lives; and that's an abuse on their fundamental human rights.
Below are consequences or effects of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM):
The victims suffer from severe and acute pains during and shortly after the processes of female genital mutilation.

The victims suffer from an excessive loss of blood alongside underlying injuries to the adjacent tissues of their reproductive organ. These include the clitoris, vagina, urethra, labia minora, labia majora, perineum and rectum.

If crude and unsterilized instruments are utilized in the processes of FGM (which is always associated with great loss of blood), bacteria and other dangerous microorganisms may enter the bloodstream and adjacent reproducion tissues, giving rise to life threatening illnesses.

The horrendous memories of female genital mutilation may live with the victims throughout their lives. Consequently, this may lead to depression, low self-esteem and other psychological trauma, thus adversely affecting the victims' relationship with others.

Some women who had underwent FGM may never enjoy sex for the rest of the lives as a result of neuromas which had developed within the victims' reproductive system. This may lead to a failed marriage.
