Ways of preventing fraud:

Fraud is defined as a deceptive action carried out by a person, group of persons or an organization through a deliberate perversion of truth in order to gain something of value, especially money, through such dishonest process.

Below are 16 ways to prevent fraud:


  1. We should never send money to strangers over the internet. This action is useful in preventing catfishing (or romance scams) as seen on various dating sites.

  2. Since fraud is often committed via the internet, we should always check the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of any visited website to confirm its authenticity. A legitimate URL must contain the domain name of the website. For instance, the URL of Len Academy must always contain the domain name ''.

  3. We should never imput our Personal Identifiable Information (PII) and financial details into unknown web pages emanating from email links. In fact, we should be cautious when clicking links in emails. Phishing attacks can be prevented through this process.

  4. Credit alert notification received via SMS may be fake. It is therefore crucial that we confirm all the money credited into our bank account through our bank's official application.

  5. We should avoid investing our money on online platforms that promises a very high Return on investment (ROI). Also, all forms of ponzi scheme should be avoided.

  6. We should not obtain loan from unregistered online loan applications, as they may eventually blackmail the loanee. These are loan sharks with no physical structure. However, we still have some genuine loan companies with structures and online application. Regardless, these should be preperly verified before obtaining loan from them.

  7. Debit and Credit cards should be well secured. The 16 digit code in front of the cards along side its expiry date should be always protected. Also, the Card Verification Value (called CVV number) at the back of the card should also be protected. In addition, the pins of our debit and credit cards should be kept private and confidential.

  8. We should be careful when making online financial donation to charity organizations. A legitimate charity organization does not compel one into making financial donations. Also, they typically do not accept cryptocurrencies and gift cards, as these are scammers preferred methods of accepting payments.

  9. Lottery organizations should carefully verify all winning lotteries, even when it comes from a known and reputable source. For individuals who have won lotteries, their winning ticket should be kept confidential and secured.

  10. We should be careful when clicking popup messages on websites, especially those stating that we have won a large sum of money. However, understand that there are numerous legitimate adverts running on various websites. Such ads can be visited if we find them useful. However, we must ensure that the websites running such adverts are legitimate.

  11. Mortgage organizations should observe due diligence before giving out loans. In this regard, all the correct and appropriate details of the loanee must be collected.

  12. Fraud detection softwares should be installed on our computers and mobile phones. Examples include, fraud scoring software, device fingerprinting, geolocation, biometrics (two factor authentication), and a trusted antivirus software. Also, strategically placing CCTV cameras in our working environment and ATM machines can help detect fraudulent behaviours.

  13. We should not provide our bank accounts for accepting payments from money laundering scams, regardless the allocated commission given to us. One will be sentensed to jail if found guilty of this fraudulent crime.

  14. We should be careful when clicking website links from dating sites and other chat applications. This is true because fraudulent links (requesting confidential information like username, email and password) may be sent by one's chat partner.

  15. Unwanted and suspicious calls, including text messages should be blocked. We should also apply this principle on social media and chat applications.
