What is Conflict?

We see and hear about conflicts in the world we live in. It's arises from various differences and disagreement between nations, families, schools and our various places of work.

The various differences that results into conflicts are attributed to the fact that people have different beliefs, personality and mentality.

Conflict can be defined as a disagreement between two or more persons characterized by exchange of words and hostilities.

Please read on Causes, Consequences and Solutions to Conflict here.

Ways to reduce Conflict in Organizations

In various organizations, conflicts can be reduced to the barest minimum if the following proactive steps are adhered to:

  • Communication

Communication is a vital skill required in any organization or business; and to this end, most hiring manager will demand for it during the recruitment process.

Trainings and seminars on sharpening communication skill should be periodically conducted by every organization.

An important point to note is the fact that all employees must completely understand their job role; and consequently given the resources to effectively carry them out.

Communication between employees should be clear and concise.

  • Set Conflict Guidelines

The guidelines to resolve conflict should be always made present in organizations. One way to go about this is to set in place a formal complaint process. This process may involve writing a formal letter to the human resource manager. The Human Resource Manager takes up the case on both parties (to be involved in a potential conflict). Applying some initiative and experience, the Human Resource Manager resolves the conflict amicably.

Please read on Essay writing here.

  • Encourage Collaboration and Teamwork

Teamwork should be one of the important goals of many organization. Not only does it increases productivity, It does also promote a sense of work relationship among workers.

Please read on Social Studies and its Objectives here.

Creating an environment where collaboration exist will further enable the workers to better understand themselves; thus directly reducing conflict in organizations.

Note: Collaboration and Teamwork also ensures understanding between the management and staff.

  • Proper Recruitment Process

This process is very crucial in every organization. With regards to office and moral etiquette, hiring the wrong persons will often result to conflict within the organization.

In a scenario where the proper recruitment process isn't followed, the person(s) recruited becomes the issue. These kind of people are often directly or indirectly involved with organizational conflict.

Some of the recruited persons (from a poor recruitment exercise) could be friends or even family members of the company’s chairman. These sort of staff may be of the opinion that 'after-all, I can't be sacked'.

  • Promote Social Events

Organizing social events can reduce conflict in organizations. Once in a while, organizations may organize get together events, get together meetings, sporting events and official holiday trips.

The above forms of social gathering fosters cooperation and a better sense of understanding among staff and (between the managers and staff).

Please read on Factors that Promote Cooperation here.

  • Apply Fair Treatment

No one is happy when treated unfairly. Managers should be very professional in the way they go about their business. They should be neutral when dealing with the members of staff. They should always put first the affairs of the organization before their personal motive.

Note: Wrong criticism on staff may affect an organization's collaboration and teamwork (as explained above).

Always remember that everyone have got their fundamental human rights.

Please read on Your Fundamental Human Right here.

  • Listening and Understanding

People do things for different reasons. To prevent or resolve conflict, one of the lines of action is to allow for explanation from the person whom we think has done wrong. We will be able to speak more wisely only when the subject matter is clearly understood.

In any organization, one should not be too quick to interfere into matters on which they have got little knowledge or understanding; as this could give rise to futher misunderstanding, and ultimately conflict.

  • Private Opinion | Feedback from Staff

Sometimes, organizations may create platforms whereby staff can give answers to questions. Also, staff can write on the various issues arising within and outside the organization.

These opinions can be anonymously written and submitted in an opinion box within the organization.

Understanding the various events amongst staff will aid the management to better manage conflict within their organization.

  • Gender Equality

No one should be stereotyped in any organization. The male and female staff should be treated appropriately.

Please read on Gender Equality and Ways to achieve it.

A staff; whether male or female should not be labeled (by the management) in such a way that all fingers will be pointed at him or her whenever something happens.

Everyone should be held responsible for their actions while measures should be put in place to further prevent such action from repeating itself.
